15th Annual Ackerman School Reunion meets Saturday, April 27

By Press Reports

Saturday, April 27, 2013 is the day and Ackerman High School campus
will be the setting for former classmates, teachers, coaches,
administrators and friends to gather for their annual school
reunion. The meeting begins in the Ty Cobb Complex at 12:00 pm
(noon) with registration and a Silent Auction until 2 pm. The
program begins at 2 pm in the auditorium.

The Ackerman School Reunion Group was organized in 1998 and is made
up of former students, administrators and friends of AHS. The purpose
of the annual meeting is renewing friendships and supporting the
school. There is no cost for the event.

We will hold a silent auction (from 12 pm noon until 2 pm) in support
of the Ackerman Reunion Scholarship Fund. Last year, the silent
auction featured wood crafts, furniture, paintings, books, pottery,
jewelry, a computer and more, with all proceeds going to support the
annual Reunion Scholarship Fund. According to reunion president
General Dick Burney (1958), “We are looking for Ackerman alumni and
friends who will donate items to the silent auction in support of our
scholarships that will be awarded this year to four graduating
seniors. Please bring your silent auction items to the Ty Cobb
Complex by 12:00 pm (Noon) on Saturday, April 27.”

“Remember to come early this year for the silent auction,
registration and fellowship. The auction and registration open at 12
Noon and close at 2:00 pm as we begin our reunion program,” added
Ackerman Reunion vice president Dale Dobbs (1964). “Not only do all
the funds raised at the Auction go for a great cause but I especially
enjoy the fellowship time during registration and Silent Auction,”
added Dobbs.

The Ackerman School Reunion Scholarship Fund was established to
provide annual scholarships to graduating seniors from Ackerman High
School who plans to further his or her education in an academic or
vocational institution of higher learning. The scholarships are
nominated and selected by the faculty of Ackerman High School. By now
most will know that the AHS Reunion co-founder, Marion Smith (1948),
went home to be with his Lord last month. Marion and his wife, Joan
(1947), co-founded the AHS Reunion and have remained its most active
cheerleaders through the years. Here’s what Marion wrote last year
about the Scholarship Fund: “The criteria of the scholarship award
are based upon the student’s economic need and desire for furthering
his/her education and training at a college or vocational
institution. Additional considerations are the student’s outstanding
moral character and reflect some of the following traits:
trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient,
cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.” Smith also noted, “I
hope that everyone will take pride in that the AHS Reunion Group has
now awarded 16 ($500) scholarships (now it’s 20) in recent years. We
are pleased to report that four worthy scholarship recipients are
being selected by the staff of AHS for this year. I urge all alumni
and friends of Ackerman School to get involved in the silent auction
and help us keep the scholarship project funded. We are in need of
donated items and I hope that everyone will be generous in their
bidding.” AHS Reunion Secretary Buddy Smith (1969) notes, “I’m very
pleased to report that some of my Dad’s final projects from his
“Poppas Country” woodshop were made specifically for this year’s
Silent Auction. It is my hope that alumni will support the
Scholarship Fund to the degree that we set an all-time high.”

According to reunion president General Dick Burney, “Last year we had
130 former students, faculty, and friends of Ackerman School from
eight states who gathered at the Ty Cobb Complex for a time of
renewing friendships and reconnecting with the current needs and
goals of the School. We have alumni who faithfully attend and we
continue to reach out to those as near as Ackerman in hopes to make
this their first year.” Last year the AHS Class of 1962 was
recognized at the event for highest attendance with 18 members present.

“The annual Ackerman School Reunion is great fun with reminiscing and
re-establishing friendships. I challenge all alumni to call a former
classmate today and meet us at the reunion on Saturday, April 27,”
added Burney.

Jerry Sanders announces that the AHS Class of 1963 will have their
50th Class Reunion to coincide with the big AHS Reunion on April 27.
Classmates are encouraged to attend the noon and 2:00 pm reunion to
meet other AHS classes. Then the Class of 1963 will have a night meal
at Pap’s Place on Main Street, Ackerman, MS at 6:00 pm. General Dick
Burney has reserved “The Red Room” at Pap’s for a 5:00 PM supper get
together for the AHS Class of 1958.
