Excited and eager to meet people in all Choctaw County communities would describe Darrell Banks, the new Agriculture and Natural Resources/4-H agent for the Mississippi Extension Service-Choctaw County.
Banks began working for the Choctaw County Extension Service on December 1, 2012 and has been busy meeting local people and finding out how the Extension Service can help them.
“My first goal is to get out into the communities of Choctaw County and find out what their needs and interests are,” said Banks. He added that he wants to meet people, gain their trust and “find out what Extension can do for you.”
Banks also wants to educate people in the area on how Extension can benefit the county.
Bank is not far from home; he was born and raised in Starkville. He is married and has four children. His background includes working with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and row crops.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Sciences from MSU and a master’s in Agriculture and Extension Education. “I love to educate people on the importance and relevance of Agriculture. I hope I can make a difference by showing people how to utilize the resources that the MSU Extension Service has to offer,” said Banks.
One part of his job as the Agriculture and Natural Resources agent is to build close working relationships with small farmers in the area to make sure they have the resources available. Banks said an example of resources the Extension Service offers is the connection between Choctaw County citizens and experts at MSU. He said they can go to these experts to find research based information or answers to questions.
Banks is also serving as the Choctaw County Extension Service 4-H agent.
“I’m excited about working with the youth of this county and helping them to reach their full potential through 4-H,” said Banks. “I want to figure out what programs the kids are interested in so that they are able to benefit from them,” he added.
4-H offers a wide variety of clubs and activities for the youth of Choctaw County with hands on experience in that area.
