School Board elects new officers, welcomes new member

In the first meeting of the year, January 14, the Choctaw County School Board elected new board officers then welcomed their new board member.

Mike Thomas (District 5 member) was elected as president of the School Board for 2013 after a nomination from Derek Hunt (District 1 member) and a second from Clint Huffman (District 2 member). Thomas replaces Linda McDaniel (District 3 member) as board president.

“Thank you for your confidence in me,” said Thomas after the board election.

“I will work diligently with our superintendent, principals and all employees so we can accomplish those (district’s motto and goals),” he later added.

Hunt was elected as vice president of the School Board for the 2013 after a nomination from Thomas and a second from Huffman. Hunt replaces Thomas as board vice president.

Laura Gibbs, new District 4 School Board member, was welcome to the Choctaw County School Board. This was her first meeting of her four year term.

“I look forward to working with everybody,” said Gibbs.

During the board meeting, David Luffrig, North American Coal-Red Hills Mine general manager, presented each school library with a donation from the mine.

“We appreciate what you do,” said Luffrig. He continued with saying the donation is a small token or gift of appreciation for everything the schools do in education. Luffrig said the Red Hills Mine wants to continue to help the educational process.

The board discussed the new Superintendent’s evaluation instrument. Thomas, now board president, said the board is required to evaluate the superintendent annually and said the instrument in question is the one recommended by the school board association.

The board discussed the evaluation instrument and if they are required to use it for this year’s evaluation. Thomas said he would find out if the board is required to use that instrument this year or not.

The School Board also held a short executive session to discuss a discipline matter.

The School Board approved the following in the financial agenda: -Docket of claims. -Teacher substitute report. -Absentee report. -Financial statements. -Diesel bids and immediate payment thereof. -Request for fixed asset disposal.

The next regularly scheduled School Board meeting will be February 11 at 7 p.m. at Central Office.
